About Us
The New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS) was established in 1996 to provide tertiary level education for those interested in a career in the Sport, Fitness and Recreation industry. Located in three different sites in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, the NZIS provides NZQA approved courses in Sport Management, Exercise Prescription, Personal Training and Pre Police Training. All courses aim to cater for both the academic and sporting needs of NZIS students.
The NZIS has a special commitment to Pacific and Maori communities. The institute aims to provide an effective and culturally relevant learning environment which meets the needs of the individual, industry and the wider community with a commitment to Pacific and Maori students.
The NZIS has always felt passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle and physical exercise throughout the community. Specially designed fitness and health programmes are an important part of NZIS community engagement.
Services We Provide
Health Initiatives
The NZIS is actively involved in promoting health and fitness initiatives specifically developed for Pacific and Maori communities. Currently, the NZIS has been engaging with community groups and primary schools in its health programme, in conjunction with Capital Coast District Health Board with the "Shake it, beat it, learn it!" programme. With the support of NZIS staff and students, Health Programme Coordinator Siaosi Anamani takes weekly fitness and aerobic sessions to involve community members in effective, and fun exercise activities.
Other NZIS health initiatives include the production of a DVD celebrating Pacific culture and identity through music and exercise. NZIS also developed the "Right Size Me" programme, in which overweight community members were supported in their efforts in living a healthier lifestyle. NZIS Personal Training students were helping them in a 12 week programme to improve their level of fitness and eating habits through providing an eating plan and professional advice from a nutritionist. The greatest success was Ta Tokerau from Porirua who lost 23 kilos whilst on the programme and continues to train for 7 days a week.

Education
The NZIS is currently enrolling for all 2009 courses, please contact info "at" nzis.co.nz or visit www.nzis.ac.nz directly for more information.
Next to providing NZQA approved diploma and certificate courses in sport management and exercise prescription, NZIS has been active in developing niche courses that complement the sport qualifications on offer. These include foundation sport courses, Personal Training, Pre Police and Information Communication Technology certificates.
These act as a pathway to higher level qualifications. Students are also supported with the tools to enhance their own sporting performance.
We strongly encourage our students to maintain and celebrate their culture and identity while they study with us at NZIS. Our student population over our three campuses has a diverse mix of cultures and we are a niche provider catering specifically for Pacific and Maori students, in terms of teaching methodology; and guidance and support. We have a specialised student support network to ensure the needs of all our students are met. We have guidance and support leaders for Pacific and Maori students at all three sites.
We have a number of NZIS scholarships available across the three sites that students may apply for. There are also a number of fully funded (tuition fees) places for Pacific Island and Maori available, provided by TEC under the Skill Enhancement programme (Rangatahi Maia and Tupulaga Le Lumana'i). These places are available in Wellington only and are assessed on the following criteria: Academic achievement, sporting achievement, club/community contribution and/or commitment to cultural/community activity. The Youth Training programme "Sportszone" is available in Wellington and Christchurch and is available as a foundation programme for those students who don't yet have the academic requirements to qualify for the tertiary courses that NZIS provides. There are no tuition fees payable on this course but students have to meet the relevant criteria.

NZIS key personal and Pacific/Maori Guidance and Support Leaders
| The importance of providing valuable educational opportunities and sport performance opportunities was a motivating force in the development of NZIS. John Fiso has led the organisation with 18 students based in Porirua in its first year to a multi site provider in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. From a strong Phys Ed teaching background and a NZ representative in Volleyball and World University team representative in Rugby League John has experienced life as a professional athlete and understands the importance of career options for young athletes. Mr. Fiso has held board and directorships both at National and regional sport organisation level and currently sits on a number of private sector boards, meaning that he has a wealth of managerial experience to draw on. John's vision has been to encourage levels of excellence in students and athletes at NZIS and provide them with a number of opportunities to succeed in. The "added value" approach to education and experiences such as the international sports tours and overseas employment opportunities have also been a driving force. |
| Shelley has been involved in education and high performance sport for many years and is the current national women's Volleyball coach. She was a member of and captained the NZ women's Volleyball team for over a decade. She was a team leader in the NZ Olympic team to Atlanta in 1996, in charge of the NZ Beach Volleyball team. As a former Physical Education teacher and a sport administrator in a leading Regional Sports Trust she has a wide range of experience in sport management and currently heads the Volleyball New Zealand High Performance programme at NZIS. "NZIS offers an enormous range of opportunities for young athletes to continue with their sport in an environment that supports and understands their passion. The qualifications offered at NZIS assist students with their future career goals and enables them to achieve the balance between their sport participation, performance and careers in the sport, fitness and recreation industry" |
